As the name suggests, this breed came all the way from Tibet. It is also known by the name Do-khyi or "home guard" which explains its primary use in its origin. This breed is considered a primitive breed, in other word, it will most likely hold on to its natural instincts required for it to survive in its natural habitat, in this case Tibet.
physical appearance
The Tibetan Mastiff is a huge dog breed with thick wooly coat that needs to brushed regularly. The double coat is immense with a heavy mane around the neck and shorter hair on the head. The coat color varies from brown, blue, or black all with or without tan markings, and various shades of gold or white. They have a sturdy bone structure and typically longer than they are tall. With square broad muzzle and pendant ears hanging forward close to the head, the Tibetan mastiff puppies are the closest thing to a panda bear you could encounter… only snugglier.

behavior
They are very mild tempered creatures but courageous and fearless at the same time. They make a loyal family pet with strong desires to please their owner. They are naturally reserved and need to be properly trained to avoid fights before brought in to socialize with other dogs. They are fine living in an apartment although they need to be walked in a daily basis. Requires an experienced owner due to its grooming needs.
