The Puli is a medium-small breed of Hungarian herding and livestock guarding dog known for its long, corded coat. It is used for both herding and guarding livestock. The Puli would commonly work together with the much larger, white Komondor, a Hungarian dog breed of (solely) livestock guardian dog. The Komondor would usually guard livestocks at night, while the Puli would take on the day shift.

physical appearance

This breed is a medium-small sized breed. The trait that make them unique is their long corded locks which cover their entire body and make them virtually waterproof. The Puli is a solid-colored dog that is usually black. Other less common coat colors are white, gray, or cream. In some countries other colors other than black are not permissible in contests, except for the UK. Adult Pulis will have floor length coat. The thickness of coat may vary.

Despite their bulky appearance and very thick coat they are very fast, agile and able to change directions instantly. They are also obedient enough to train for athletic competition.

behavior

The Puli is a lively, cheerful little dog who is very loyal. They are excellent family pets and will adapt to most environment. Althugh they may be wary of strangers, they will not act aggressively towards them. They are highly inteligent and therefore are easy to train. They are loyal to their owners and are highly active and keep a playful, puppy-like behavior throughout their lifetime. They require a lot of exercise and open room, preferably outdoors. Although they can easily be housebroken, Pulis are not well suited for the city lifestyle. If confined in tight spaces they may develop behavioral issues like, hiperactivity or on the opposite, be very lazy and aloof.
