Khala puppy
Hairless Khala

Originated from Mexico, this breed is rarely seen outside the Latin America. Even within the same country, they are known by different names. They are only recently classified simply as "khala" which is the Bolivian Quechua Indian word meaning 'without clothing'. Almost every Latin country has a variety of this breed, whether the medium sized, somewhat heavy bodied 'pottery' type, or the taller, leaner 'gazehound' type.

physical appearance

There are three different sizes of this breed. There is the Hairless Khala Medio, also called the pottery type, and the Hairless Khala Grande (long legged or sighthound type.) The Medio is a medium sized hound, powerful yet graceful. The Grande gives the impression of a sighthound, well coordinated and able to move with poise and exceptional agility. They come in different shades of gray.

behavior

The Khalas need to be socialized well, because they can be a little unfriendly to strangers. Owners need to display gentle but firm authority over the dog. They will accept other pets with the proper leadership from their owner. Like any other hairless breed, the Khalas have a very bad dentition, which is why they tend to walk (or run away, to be exact) from a serious confrontation. The Khala tend to identify very closely with others of their kind (most hairless dogs do) and are happiest when there are at least two of them in a home. Do not allow this dog to develop Small Dog Syndrome, human induced behaviors where the dog believes he is pack leader to humans. This can cause varying degrees of behavior issues. Ideally, Khalas are better living in a fenced yard, since as a hound, their instinct would be to chase anything without any thought. They are fine living in a confined space like an apartment, but need to be taken out for a walk daily.
