Basenji is a breed of hunting dog originated from central Africa. Although Basenjis look like your typical dog next door, they posess a unique ability to "yodel" instead of bark. Basenjis have an unusual-shaped larynx that prevent them from barking. Another unique fact about Basenjis is that they only come into estrus (when females are "in heat") once a year.
physical appearance
Basenjis have a short coat usually with two or three different colors, mixed with white. Basenjis either come in red, black, black with tan markings or brindle (a mix of 2 colors that forms marble-like pattern). The ears are straight, small, erect and open in the front. They are small in size, around 22-26 lbs and are typically long as they are tall. They are very active and powerful dogs despite their size.

behavior
Basenjis are alert, affectionate, energetic and curious. They are a bit reserved towards strangers and should not be trusted with animals other than canines. Why? Because their curious nature may put an end to your canary pet. On the other hand, Basenjis are very keen to please their owners. So after that canary incident, you may found them being extra nice to you by not yodeling at night. Just kidding, but it may be possible with proper training. Afterall, Basenjis are very receptive towards training. They are best with people who are calm but firm, people who sticks to the rules they made. In absence of such act of leadership, basenjis may take over the role and do as they wish. If you think you are a bit on the passive side this is not the ideal breed for you. Basenjis hates wet weather, so they might be the breed for you who lives in warm weather.
