akbash puppy
akbash

Akbash originaly came from the western part of Turkey. It is used mainly as a livestock guard dog dog because of its calm personality around other creatures. Like any other guard dogs, the Akbash are generally larger and have a sturdier structure than your everyday dogs. The name Akbash is derived from the Turkish word “akbas”, meaning “white head”.

physical appearance

Like I've mentioned earlier, Akbash is a large dog weighing in average 90-140lbs. They have a solid white short to medium length coat , with long legs and a curled furry tail. Akbash is very muscularly built due to the working nature of the breed. It has a square head with ears that fold flat beside its face.

behavior

This breed is another example of gentle giants. They are very mild tempered creatures towards their owners and livestocks but naturally aggresive towards other dogs or larger animals. They are fine being by themselves as their job as livestock guardians require them to be independent. This doesn't mean they are good for those of you career driven people who are rarely home. Akbash dogs are meant to be outside all day with an activity that demand their full attention. They are best suited in large fenced yards in a countryside setting. At first it maybe tough to train Akbash, they are famous for acting like they're smarter than their trainer, but hang in there! Once you bond with these elegant giants you'll see they are loyal pets who are more than willing to sacrifice their lives to save yours at any given time.<
